FG Suspends Two Correctional Officers Over Attempt to Secure Passport for Inmate

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the Federal Government has suspended two personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) following their involvement in an attempt to procure an international passport for an inmate, a serious breach of protocol and ethical conduct.
OTN New further reports that the suspension, which was disclosed in a statement issued by the NCoS Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, came after the misconduct was uncovered through the automated passport application process and other ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Immigration Service.
Abubakar, who is a Deputy Controller of Corrections, explained that the incident occurred about two weeks ago and was exposed through interagency collaboration under the Ministry of Interior.
He described the act as a clear contradiction of established rules and procedures, labelling it “unacceptable and impermissible.”
He referenced a media report that brought the incident to light and confirmed that disciplinary measures had been swiftly taken.
Abubakar said “necessary disciplinary actions were taken including the suspension of the two correctional personnel implicated in the incident by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) chaired by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubumni Tunji-Ojo.”
“The Controller General of Corrections (CGC) Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has reiterated his commitment to upholding discipline, transparency, and professionalism in all custodial centres across the country.
“The Service categorically states that any personnel found engaging in acts of misconduct, corruption, or sabotage will be shown the way out of the system” he said.
He added that the Nigerian Correctional Service remains focused on its core mandate of ensuring safe custody, humane treatment, and the reform of inmates in line with international standards.
