DIGNITY IN CUSTODY: A CALL FOR ACCOUNTABILITY IN NIGERIA'S POLICE FORCE

By: Comrade Amb. Kunle Sodipo FICSSM,MNIMN,ANIPR

The recent incident involving popular street-hop artiste Habeeb Okikiola, aka Portable, has sparked widespread outrage and highlighted a pressing issue in Nigeria: the violation of suspects' human rights in police custody. A disturbing video showed Portable in visible distress, handcuffed and shirtless, pleading with officers inside a police facility. This incident is a stark reminder that, despite progress, there is still much work to be done to ensure dignity and respect for all individuals in custody.

Nigeria has witnessed significant improvements in the operation standard of its police force in recent times, with increased emphasis on community policing, intelligence-led policing, and human rights training. The Nigeria Police Force has also established specialized committees, such as the *Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC)* and the Internal Affairs Department, to address complaints of police misconduct and promote accountability.

*A Step in the Right Direction*

The Ogun State Police Command's prompt action in launching a formal investigation into the incident is commendable. This demonstrates a commitment to accountability and transparency, and sends a strong message that torture, intimidation, and public humiliation of suspects will not be tolerated.

*The Importance of Upholding Human Rights*

The Nigerian Constitution and international human rights standards guarantee the right to dignity and protection from torture or cruel treatment for all individuals, including those in police custody. It is imperative that law enforcement agencies prioritize the safety and well-being of suspects, ensuring access to legal representation and fair treatment.

*A Call to Action*

The Ogun State Police Command's investigation must be thorough and transparent, with findings made public to ensure accountability. Any personnel found culpable must face strict disciplinary measures, and the police force must take concrete steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

*Conclusion*

The Portable incident serves as a wake-up call for Nigeria's police force to continue prioritizing dignity and respect for all individuals in custody. While acknowledging the high level of improvement in operation standards, we recognize that a few bad eggs can tarnish the reputation of the entire force. Let's continue to support and encourage reforms that promote transparency, accountability, and good governance in Nigeria's police force. The Nigeria Police Force has shown it can do better, and it's time for all stakeholders to work together to ensure that the rights of all individuals are protected and respected.
