OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, has disclosed that he is targeting no fewer than 10,000 Lagos residents for free healthcare services as part of activities marking his 89th birthday, with a large-scale medical outreach scheduled to hold across parts of the state.
According to a statement issued on Sunday in Abeokuta by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the initiative is being organised under the auspices of the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation.
OTN News further reports that the Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Olalekan Makinde, said that the Lagos Medical Mission will take place in selected communities within Ikorodu and Alimosho Local Government Areas between February 27 and March 4.
Makinde explained that the outreach is designed to deliver comprehensive and life-changing healthcare services, completely free of charge, to more than 10,000 Nigerians, particularly vulnerable and underserved residents.
He described the initiative as a legacy-driven humanitarian intervention to commemorate Obasanjo’s 89th birthday, noting that it reflects the former president’s long-standing commitment to public service, nation-building, and the well-being of Nigerians.
The statement added that the medical mission is scheduled to begin on Friday at the Ijede LCDA Council Hall, Ijede, in Ikorodu, and continue on Saturday at the Imota Mini Stadium, Imota, also in Ikorodu.
It further added that from March 2 to March 4, the exercise will move to Alade Stadium, Command Road, Agbado/Oke-Odo, in the Alimosho area of Lagos.
Makinde said that beneficiaries will receive a wide range of medical services, including free ear care and provision of hearing aids to qualified patients, comprehensive eye screening, supply of prescription glasses, and referral and sponsorship for eye surgeries where necessary.
The outreach will also feature cardiovascular screening, blood pressure checks, heart health assessments, preventive medical counselling, and the distribution of essential medications at no cost to beneficiaries.
He emphasised that the Lagos Medical Mission underscores the Foundation’s commitment to Obasanjo’s vision of accessible healthcare and compassionate intervention, particularly for disadvantaged populations.
According to Makinde, the programme is open to elderly persons, children, families, individuals with untreated hearing or vision impairments, people with cardiovascular concerns, and other vulnerable residents across Lagos State.
However, the outreach is expected to significantly ease healthcare burdens for thousands of residents while reinforcing the role of philanthropy in addressing gaps in Nigeria’s public health system.
