The National Examination Council (NECO) revealed plans to summon and question the leadership of 40 secondary schools across 17 states due to suspected widespread cheating in this year’s Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
As gathered by OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News, NECO's Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, made the announcement during a recent press briefing in Minna, the Niger State capital, as he presented the 2024 SSCE results.
Wushishi highlighted that 8,437 students were caught in various forms of malpractice, a significant drop from 12,030 in 2023, a 30.1% decrease.
He explained that the implicated schools will be called in for discussions with the council, and appropriate disciplinary measures will follow.
Additionally, one school in Ekiti State faces de-registration after being found guilty of mass cheating in two core subjects.
“During the 2024 SSCE, we identified mass cheating across 40 schools in 17 states. They will be summoned for talks before sanctions are enforced."
"One school in Ekiti was flagged for de-recognition due to cheating in two core and one science subject."
"Moreover, 21 supervisors across 12 states are recommended for blacklisting due to misconduct ranging from poor supervision, aiding malpractice, fleeing from duties, extortion, intoxication, and negligence,” Wushishi added.
On the performance front, over 60% of the 2024 candidates passed both English Language and Mathematics.
OTN News revealed that a total of 1,376,423 students registered for the exam, with 1,367,736 sitting for it.
Among them, 828,824 candidates (60.55%) achieved five credits, including English and Mathematics, while 1,147,597 candidates (83.9%) earned five credits regardless of English and Math.
