It’s Painful to See My Own Party, Pretending Like Tinubu is Easy to Beat - PDP Chieftain, Sowunmi Cries

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has lamented that he finds it painful to see his party, PDP, pretending like Tinubu is easy to beat.

OTN News further reports that Sowunmi who said this when he appears on Politics Today, urged the party to begin efforts to reconcile with former member and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to him, Peter Obi, a former PDP man, was allocated over 6 million votes in 2023. Anyone serious within the PDP must ask: how do we bring him back, especially now that his support is organic and growing?”

Sowunmi expressed deep concerns over PDP’s internal instability post-2023, describing defections to the APC as self-inflicted damage.

He said that PDP’s leadership is ignoring political realities while underestimating President Tinubu—a mistake, he believes, will prove costly.

“Tinubu may appear frail, but his political intellect is formidable. People underrate him at their own peril,” Sowunmi warned. “It’s painful to see my own party pretending Tinubu is easy to beat.”

He also criticized the proposed opposition coalition—which reportedly involves Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and other figures—for being self-serving.

He said that there are claims that Atiku has offered to make Obi his running mate and hand over power after a year, but Sowunmi sees it as opportunistic.

He opined that the ongoing coalition talks surrounding Obi may be a strategic ploy to exploit his popularity rather than to offer genuine collaboration

He said, “these coalition talks are just a way to use Peter Obi’s popularity. It’s his choice if he allows it. You don’t build a rescue mission for Nigeria on selfish motives."

OTN News recalls that Obi had left the PDP in 2022, citing corruption within the party’s primary process, including vote-buying and internal manipulation. Since his departure, he has become a significant political force through the Labour Party.

OTN News, however, observes that Sowunmi’s comments add to growing debate over the future of Nigeria’s opposition politics, particularly as the 2027 elections begin to take shape.
