Few hours after he was sworn in as the new governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo has appointed Barrister Musa Ikhilor as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), named Dr. Samson Osagie and Senator Oshiomole's son, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole as cabinet members.
These appointments, marks Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to establishing his administration’s executive team immediately after assuming office, without any unnecessary delays typical of Nigerian office holders who wait for months before making appointments.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News gathered that the Governor also announced two notable nominations to his cabinet:a former federal legislator and prominent legal professional, was appointed as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, while Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, the son of former Governor and current Senator Adams Oshiomhole, got nominated as the Commissioner for Health in Edo State.
According to a press statement issued by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the governor, these appointments are set to reinforce the administration’s mission, with confirmation of Osagie and Oshiomhole’s nominations pending Edo State House of Assembly approval. “The nominations of Osagie and Oshiomhole will be sent to the State Assembly for confirmation,” stated Itua.
Dr. Samson Osagie brings extensive experience to the role of Attorney-General. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1995, he currently serves as the Vice President of the African Bar Association (West African Region).
Osagie, a seasoned lawmaker with terms in both the Edo State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives, held the influential position of Minority Whip in the House, highlighting his legislative acumen.
Hailing from Uhunmwode Local Government Area, Osagie’s academic credentials are vast. He holds a Law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, along with three Master’s degrees in Law, Public Administration, and International Relations.
In addition, he earned a Doctorate in Political Economy and Development Studies, showcasing his depth in legal and administrative expertise.
Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, nominated for Health Commissioner, follows a path rooted in health and research, with foundational studies at St. Anne’s Primary School and Command Secondary School. His medical career began at Ahmadu Bello University, where he earned his MBBS degree.
Although a section of Nigerians have started to react to the announcement of cabinet members by the new Edo Governor with feelings, with some praising him for hitting the ground running, others have criticized him over the appointment of the son of his political god father, Senator Adams Oshiomole as Commissioner for Health, wondering if Edo State is now a family business of the Oshiomole's.
