FRSC Corps Marshal Warns Nigerians to Avoid Night Travel Due to Rising Fatal Accidents

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has issued a stern advisory urging Nigerians to avoid travelling at night due to the significant risks involved.

As gathered by OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News in a statement released by the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed emphasized that night journeys are particularly hazardous, urging commercial drivers, fleet operators, and private vehicle owners to stop engaging in night time travels.

He highlighted the alarming rise in road traffic crashes (RTCs) that occur after dark, noting that these incidents tend to be more severe compared to those happening during daylight hours.

He further said that reduced visibility, driver fatigue, excessive speeding, and the potential for falling asleep at the wheel are all contributing factors to the increased danger.

Mohammed also pointed out recent tragic accidents, including a fatal crash in Lapai, Niger State, on September 8, which claimed 37 lives when four vehicles collided and caught fire.

Speeding and driver fatigue were major causes of the incident. He added that another deadly accident occurred on September 12, killing 18 people.

Mohammed criticized those who prioritize night travel for economic gain, overloading their vehicles to avoid being stopped by FRSC patrols, and putting passengers and other road users at risk.

While the FRSC cannot legally prohibit night trips, Mohammed strongly urged the public to reconsider their choices and plan their journeys during the day, stressing that nighttime crashes often happen in areas where emergency rescue services are not readily available.
