The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the University of Ibadan, Chief Bisi Akande, has made a significant gesture by dedicating his allowances to support the education of students pursuing Science degrees at the University.

As gathered by OPEN TELEVISION Naija (OTN) News in a formal letter addressed to the Registrar, Mr. Ganiyu Saliu, and dated August 21, 2024, Akande conveyed his decision to forgo any personal financial benefits from his position, instead choosing to channel these funds toward the academic needs of students studying Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Akande, who previously served as the Governor of Osun State, emphasized that his appointment at the University was accepted as a national duty, with no intention of personal remuneration.

He stated that while his role might be entitled to allowances for attending meetings of the Governing Council and its committees, he wishes for these payments to be utilized solely for the benefit of deserving undergraduate students enrolled in Science courses.

The former Governor detailed his vision for the funds, suggesting they be used to establish an endowment that could provide annual scholarships or other awards.

These would cover essential costs such as accommodation and University fees, ensuring that students who demonstrate academic merit in the Sciences receive the necessary financial support to complete their education.

In addition to this commitment, Akande revealed that a foundation has already been established to ensure the longevity of this initiative.

He proposed that the office of the Dean of Student Affairs, or another appropriate University academic officer, be involved in the selection process of eligible students. This involvement is intended to ensure transparency and fairness in awarding the scholarships.

Akande also addressed potential future scenarios where his University allowances might be terminated. To prevent any disruption to the support provided to students, he assured that the Adebisi Akande Foundation, which has been incorporated for similar purposes, would step in to cover any funding gaps.

This foresight is aimed at ensuring that no student benefiting from this arrangement is left stranded due to unforeseen circumstances.

OTN News revealed that the memo was copied to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Adebisi Akande Foundation, with instructions to collaborate closely with the University to implement this directive effectively.

In conclusion, Akande’s decision reflects a deep commitment to supporting the next generation of scientists and underscores his dedication to service over personal gain.
