You are childless, In a Contract Marriage' Oshiomhole hits back at Obaseki
The political temperature of electioneering campaigns in the build up to Edo State gubernatorial elections has assumed an unprecedented high level as Adams Oshiomole has responded to an earlier statement by the wife of Edo State governor describing Betsy Obaseki as childless and into a possible contract marriage.

The Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has thrown heavy words at Betsy Obaseki, wife of Edo state governor in response to her diatribe on Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the September 21, 2024 governorship election.
Oshiomhole, a former governor of the state expressed sarcastic comments about the Edo state first lady who he said had described the APC candidate as a man without wife.
Betsy reportedly made the comment at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign in Edo Central Senatorial District.
However, in a swift response to the caustic comment by the governor's wife, Oshiomhole said: “I was shocked to see Mrs. Obaseki saying that our candidate has no wife.
“Here is a woman who has no child. Between him and Obaseki they have no child… They are childless.
“They are even not ready to adopt. I don’t blame anybody who don’t have a child. But people who have love for children go to motherless home and adopt.
“And they have not adopted. They are both in their sixties. So, you married… I don’t know whether it is a contract marriage, but they have no child.”
The development has got many tongues waging on social media as many Netizens reflect on the damaging extent to which Nigerian politicians could go to score political points, using personal issues that bear no direct significance to governance during electioneering campaigns.
While many people have expressed opinions in favour of Oshiomole, noting that his caustic comment against Mrs. Obaseki is the best response for her initial equally caustic comment about the Edo APC Gubernatorial candidate, others opine that Oshiomole has crossed the boundaries of morality by using the family's childless as a point against them.
To some Nigerians, the development is a further testament to the fact that Nigerian politicians do not bring issues-based political manifestos to the table of electioneering campaigns.
