The Police Command in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory Abuja has refuted reports claiming that a naval officer who recently went viral, Lt. Ahmed Yerima, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Abuja over the weekend.
The Command, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, described the claims circulating on social media as false and capable of causing unnecessary fear among residents, urging the public to ignore the report and rely on verified reports only.
In her words, “The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima.
The Command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.
“The public is advised to disregard this false information and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing unnecessary panic.”
She added that residents should remain alert and report suspicious activities to the nearest police division or the Command’s emergency lines for quick response.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News recalls that the young naval officer, Yerima, gained national attention following his confrontation with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over a disputed piece of land said to be linked to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo.
The recorded clash drew nationwide attention, prompting reactions from government officials and members of the public.
Wike later explained why he visited the land in question, located at No. 1946, Gaduwa District, Abuja. He insisted that he has no issue with the military and respects the institution.
“I have respect for the military, and I’ll continue to respect them. I know what the institution stands for. I’m not a fool, I went to school. So anyone trying to suggest I have problems with them is wrong. I have no problem with the military, and I never will. Why would I have issues with the government? But this is a private matter,” he said.
OTN News further recalls that multiple sources reported the alleged assassination attempt on the young Naval officer on Sunday prior to the rebuttal by the FCT Police Command.
As at press time, efforts to get official responses from the military authorities on the alleged assassination have not yielded fruits.
