The ancient city of Abeokuta the Ogun state capital came alive on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, as final year Mass Communication students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Ojere, teamed up with the campus Radio station to marked this year’s World Humanitarian Day with a vibrant community outreach targeted at creating increased awareness on the importance of volunteering and humanitarian services in the development of our modern world.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the event, rated as the first ever Outside Broadcast (OB) community outreach to be hosted by media students of the institution, featured a colourful road show train of media students who took turns to address Abeokuta residents about the commemoration of the World Humanitarian Day 2025 while blasting pre-recorded jingles from the road show train.
OTN News further reports as gathered from the coordinator of the event and host of DEVELOPMENT TODAY, a flagship programme on MAPOLY Radio 99.7 FM Ojere Abeokuta, Mr.Olufemi Orunsola that the commemorative outreach was strategically organized to also expose the final year broadcast major students in the state-owned Polytechnic to the modern operational dynamics of Outside Broadcast transmissions and the need for volunteering towards community development.
The celebration, which began at the Panseke Skating Ground where students had gathered as early as 8 a.m, witnessed a colourful display of creative talents, before they embarked on a lively procession using the Marcopolo Bus of the Polytechnic to move the students to the campus.
The broadcast students were seen addressing people at the popular June 12 market, Panseke, Oluwo junction, Iyana Oloke and Abule Ojere as well as the main Bus Shed of the campus in major Nigerian languages like Hausa, Igbo, Edo, Yoruba, Pidgin English as well as in French language.
Singing, dancing, and engaging Abeokuta residents along the Onikolobo route that leads to Moshood Abiola Polytechnic campus, the team did not not only spread the message of humanitarian service but also created public awareness about the educational programmes aired on MAPOLY Radio 99.7 FM Ojere Abeokuta.
A major high point of the event was the highly revealing and inspiring live interactive interview session held with one of the Special Guests invited to commemorate the day, Lion Barrister Tosin Adeyemi Taiwo, a high profile member of the Lions Club International, who explained in details, the meaning of humanitarian services, nature of volunteering, benefits of volunteering for humanitarian causes as well as some of the challenges faced by social volunteers in Nigeria.
In his words, "In every community, there are always less privileged and vulnerable people who have genuine needs, of which the government alone cannot meet such needs. As such, teaming up to meet the needs of such vulnerable people is the heartbeat of Lionism and humanitarian services".
Lion Taiwo, who shared his personal experiences about humanitarian activities of the Lions Club with the students gathered at the orchard near the Main Bus Shed of the campus, venue of the Outside Broadcast event, encouraged students to join service clubs like the Leo’s Club on their campus and get involved with rendering humanitarian services, noting that, "One does not necessarily need to become so wealthy before engaging in humanitarian services."
Another high point of the event was the electric moment another Special Guest, the National Head, Celebrity Special Marshalls(CSM) unit of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) in Nigeria, CSM Julie Chi-Nwaoha stormed the campus in the company of the State Coordinator of the unit, Hon.Kehinde Soaga (DGN).
Chi-Nwaoha, who is known globally for her dedication to humanitarian services focused on road safety advocacy and emergency responding via her ONTHEHIGHWAY AFRICA projects, was interviewed live on MAPOLY Radio 99.7 FM Ojere.
In her session, she emphasized the need for students and Nigerian youths in general, to embrace and imbibe proper road safety cultures and habits, noting that the common practice of filming victims of road crashes in order to post videos on social media without learning how to give first aids or emergency responding is a wrong practice in Nigeria that has to change.
Chi-Nwaoha insisted that "Road safety is everyone's business. As such, students, residents of local communities, campus drivers and all other road users must not ignore basic road safety rules, adding that "Nigerian youths must be knowledgeable about how to save lives during emergencies and road crashes in order to save lives"
The Celebrity Special Marshalls Head, who thereafter paid a courtesy visit to the Head, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of the Polytechnic, Mr.Yemi Ajibola in his office, sought collaboration with the institution towards establishing a Road Safety Club in the Polytechnic.
The World Humanitarian Day 2025 commemorative event peaked with the presentation of Awards of Excellence in Humanitarian Services to the CSM FRSC Head, Julie Chi-Nwaoha by the Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr.Yemi Ajibola and the General Manager of the campus Radio station, Deacon Kunle Oluwusi, in the company of the Head of Programmes, Mr.Olufemi Orunsola.
On the whole, OTN News observes that the colourful World Humanitarian Day commemorative outing combined education, entertainment, and advocacy, leaving a mark not just on the campus but also on the Ojere host community of the campus radio station and Abeokuta environs.
