OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the United Kingdom has praised President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing them as bold, necessary, and capable of unlocking fresh opportunities for Nigeria’s growth.
OTN News further reports as gathered that the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, gave the commendation earlier this week during a courtesy visit to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the State House in Abuja.
According to Montgomery, the UK government was impressed by the reforms, which, though challenging, had already begun to create positive prospects for trade and investment between both nations.
He also commended the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), describing it as a strong platform for empowering women, especially in education, health, and humanitarian causes.
According to him, London is closely monitoring Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional amendment process, particularly the push for special seats for women in the National Assembly, which he said could strengthen gender representation in politics.
In her response, Senator Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians through the Renewed Hope Initiative, which she noted aligns with President Tinubu’s development agenda.
“I believe we can help each other, if we really show concern. RHI focuses also on women empowerment in the informal sector. These are the ones we are touching their lives directly,” she said.
The First Lady also expressed concern about the dwindling number of women in the National Assembly, pledging to support initiatives aimed at raising female participation in governance.
“We have to really know the right people to represent us, who can really do the work, and that is what we have to enlighten our women about,” she said.
The British Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever, was part of the visiting delegation.
