The Former President of Nigerian, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, revealed that his mother carried his pregnancy for 12 months as she battled with what he described as witches and wizards.
Obasanjo shared this at the presentation of a drama titled “Aremu omo Asabi,” held in honor of his late mother at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He lamented that his mother did not live to enjoy the fruits of her labor.
Obasanjo said, "I was told I was in her womb for 12 months, and since I was born, I have not been left for once. She had nine children, but only two of us survived—myself and my sister. I was the only one who went to school because my father believed that no matter how educated a female child is, she would end up in the kitchen."
OPEN TELEVISION Naija reports that the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, represented by His Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, described Mama Bernice Obasanjo as a great woman whose influence endures through her children, especially Chief Obasanjo, who remains a significant figure in Nigeria’s history. Abiodun remarked that mothers are the foundational bedrock of any society.
He asserted that the musical drama was not just recounting history but also a reminder of the sacrifices mothers make.
“This tribute is also a call to action for all of us to honor and support mothers in every way possible. It reminds us of our collective responsibility to create an enabling environment where every mother’s hopes for their children can flourish."
"This is why the current administration continues to pursue policies that ensure access to quality education, healthcare, and opportunities for all, so that the dreams mothers have for their children can be realized,” he said.
Also speaking, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Salu Hundeyin, commended Chief Obasanjo for honoring his late mother after 66 years.
He pointed out that mothers are special instruments in the hands of God and man, deserving of special treatment and the necessary honor.
