OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen has said that Rashidi Yekini remains Nigeria’s greatest striker, dismissing growing comparisons as he focuses on team success.

OTN News further reports that Osimhen makes the remarks following Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a result that sends the Super Eagles into the semi-finals.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, the Napoli forward downplays discussions about his goal-scoring record relative to the late football legend.

“It doesn’t matter if I equal or surpass Rasheed Yekini’s record,” Osimhen says. “For me, Mr Yekini is the greatest striker Nigeria has ever produced. I just want to win something important for my country.”

The 27-year-old striker’s comments come amid increasing attention on his international goal tally.

Osimhen has scored 35 goals and provided 14 assists in 51 appearances for Nigeria, bringing him close to Yekini’s record of 37 goals in 62 games.

Despite being near the record, Osimhen emphasizes that personal milestones are secondary to team success, making it clear that his priority is helping Nigeria secure a major trophy.

The Super Eagles now prepare to face host nation Morocco in the AFCON 2025 semi-final, as they continue their pursuit of continental glory.
