Under-Bridge Rooms Quit Notice: Lagos Set to Remove Over 100 Shanties Today

The Lagos State Government has vowed to remove over 100 shanties, housing illegal squatters at the Adeniji Adele Underbridge, from today, Monday, May 6, 2024.

It would be recalled that Open Television Naija reported the discovery of the under bridge "apartments" where tenants were paying up to N250,000 per annum with the Lagos state government making moves to embark on clean-up exercise of under-bridges within the Ijora, Apongbon, Obalende and Dolphin estate Ikoyi axis of the state where several illegal squatters have been dislodged.

On the Adeniji-Adele underbridge, the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this during an interview with newsmen on Sunday.

Tokunbo explained that “The removal is coming after the expiration of a 48 hours’ removal notice served on all occupants of the shanties to move with their belongings.”

The commissioner added that operatives of the Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI/LAGESC, and officials from the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance, MEC, department of the ministry will be given security back up to conduct the operation on Monday.

According to Wahab, “The exercise is part of the avowed commitment of the present administration under Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to reclaim all ungoverned spaces that dot the Lagos landscape.

“Unsightly shanties which are located in the heart of Lagos island represents a distorted image of what a smart city like lagos should be.” he said.

Wahab further added that apart from the unsanitary conditions of residents in the shanties, it also serve as hiding places for criminals and points for peddling hard drugs and substances which are injurious to the wellbeing of law abiding residents.

The Commissioner therefore, urged all the occupants of the shanties, in their own interests, to voluntarily move out with their belongings before the commencement of the enforcement operations on Monday.
