Tinubu Swears in New INEC Boss Professor Amupitan Today

Reports reaching the news desk at OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News have it that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will swear in Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), today Thursday 23rd October, 2025.
OTN News further reports as gathered from sources familiar with the President's programme that the swearing-in in ceremony is scheduled to hold at 12:00 noon at the Council Chamber of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Expectedly, the ceremony is expected to be attended by key members of the Federal Executive Council, the leadership of the National Assembly, legal luminaries, civil society stakeholders, and senior officials of INEC.
According to a notice issued on Wednesday by INEC’s Deputy Director of Publicity, Wilfred Ifogah, on behalf of the Director of Voter Education and Publicity, the new INEC Chairman will also hold his first official meeting with directors of the commission today.
The meeting of the new boss of the electoral umpire with INEC staff will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the INEC Conference Hall in its headquarters.
“In view of the above, members of the INEC Press Corps are invited to cover the opening ceremony of the event,” the notice read.
OTN News recalls that President Tinubu had nominated Amupitan to fill the vacant position, following Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s exit on Tuesday, October 7.
OTN News also recalls that earlier, in a statement by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President had explained that Amupitan was picked based on his apolitical stance, integrity and impeccable record of service.
President Tinubu also told the council that Amupitan is the first person from Kogi, North-Central state, nominated to occupy the position and is apolitical.
Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Professor of Law at the University of Jos, was confirmed by the Senate on October 16, 2025, following his endorsement by the National Council of State.
He holds LL.B, LL.M, and Ph.D degrees from the University of Jos, where he joined the Faculty of Law in 1989 and rose to become a full professor in 2008.
He earned an LLM at UNIJOS in 1993 and a PhD in 2007, amid an academic career that began in 1989, following his National Youth Service at the Bauchi State Publishing Corporation in Bauchi from 1988 to 1989.
He has served as Head of Department, Dean of Law, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), and until recently, was Pro-Chancellor of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.
He was conferred the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2014 and is considered a leading voice in corporate governance, privatisation law, and the law of evidence.
His academic footprint includes over 50 publications and years of mentorship of legal professionals across Nigeria.
