Tinubu Appoints New NIS Director General

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the president of the federal republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu as the new Director General of the National Institute of Sports (NIS).
OTN News further reports that Shaibu who succeeds Professor Olawale Moronkola is expected to assume office with immediate effect.
OTN News observes that Shaibu, who boasts a rich pedigree in sports administration, is widely acknowledged for revitalizing the sports sector in Edo State during his tenure as Deputy Governor.
OTN News further observes that under his leadership, Edo witnessed a resurgence in grassroots sports and youth engagement through structured policies and investments.
Speaking, a close associate said, “Comrade Shaibu made a significant impact in Edo’s sports landscape. His vision created platforms for young athletes to shine and built a culture of excellence."
Furthermore, the Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to the President, Adeboye Anthony Adeyinka, in a congratulatory message, lauded the appointment, describing it as well-deserved.
He said, “I want to formally congratulate my good friend and brother, Comrade Philip Shaibu, on his recent appointment as DG of NIS. Without mincing words, he deserves this prestigious appointment. His track record and genuine commitment to sports development prove that he has the capacity and capability to lead NIS to greater heights.”
He added, “Shaibu is a well-known figure in the country’s sports industry and beyond. I am confident he will bring his expertise to bear in his new role, aligning with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
OTN News, however, observes that the National Institute of Sports which was established in 1974 during the administration of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), with a mission to enhance Nigeria’s performance in international sporting events, is tasked with producing top-tier coaches, sports scientists, and managers, while conducting relevant research in sports science and development.
