Only Genuine Reconciliation With Lawmakers Can Save Fubara From Impeachment - Rivers APC Chapter Warns

By: Israel Adeleke

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has warned suspended Governor, Siminialaye Fubara, that he may face impeachment if he fails to make real efforts to reconcile with the state’s lawmakers.

OTN News further reports as gathered that the Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee, Tony Okocha, who gave the warning in Abuja, on Tuesday, said that the suspended governor had not taken any steps to settle the political rift between himself and the elected members of the State House of Assembly.

According to him, I can confirm that there is no reconciliation effort currently underway in Rivers.

“The suspended Governor, Fubara, has not made any move to reconcile with the lawmakers.

“Only genuine reconciliation can save him from impeachment, as the Supreme Court judgment stands.” Okocha said.

OTN News recalls that the crisis in Rivers State deepened as a result of weeks of tension between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The crisis further got worsen on March 18 when President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state, leading to Tinubu suspending both Fubara and the State Assembly and appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as the sole administrator for six months.

OTN News further recalls that, the Peoples Democratic Party Governors took the matter to court, but all move to no avail.

However, recent closed-door meetings involving the President, Wike, and Fubara have raised hopes that peace talks may soon begin.

Subsequently, amid fresh reports that the President may use the June 12 anniversary to lift the suspension and reinstate the governor, the APC in Rivers insisted there has been no effort from Fubara to make peace with the lawmakers.

The party maintained that without a true move to mend the rift, the governor risks being removed from office, as the Supreme Court’s ruling on the matter still stands.
