Ogun Police Deploy Tactical Teams, Move to Reassure Ajebo Community Over Viral Security Alert

By: Israel Adeleke

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the Ogun State Police Command has said that it has moved to calm residents of Ajebo community in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area following widespread concern triggered by a viral social media video alleging an imminent attack by herdsmen.

OTN News further reports that the force who disclosed this in a statement issued to press men, noted that the commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, dispatched the Command’s tactical units, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), to carry out an intelligence-driven assessment in and around the community.

According to the statement, the operation was conducted in collaboration with the Amotekun Corps, So-Safe Corps, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), local hunters, and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN).

According to findings from the surveillance operation, the Fulani settlers referenced in the viral video were neither hostile migrants nor newcomers. Instead, officers discovered they were longstanding residents living peacefully within the Ajebo environment. Women and children were seen in their makeshift shelters, and no arms, harmful items, or suspicious activities were found. The absence of adult males was explained by their routine travel to Oyo State for trading, a pattern reportedly consistent with their economic lifestyle.

The statement also noted that a wider sweep of the area also revealed an extended RUGA settlement that has existed for more than a decade.

The command explained that the traditional ruler, Oba Rueben Oluwole, who allocated land to the settlers, has been invited by the police for clarification.

The Baale of Alapako, where another cluster of Fulani huts was located, is also expected to meet with the Commissioner of Police, the statement added.

"The Kabiyesi, Oba Rueben Oluwole, who is said to have authorized the allocation of land to the settlers, has been invited for clarification. Additionally, the Baale of Alapako, where another cluster of Fulani huts were identified, has also been invited for a meeting with the Commissioner of Police."

"The combined team of security agencies is maintaining surveillance within the forest area, approximately 10km from the main community. Their presence is strictly precautionary, as the settlers were found to be unarmed and living peacefully."

"The Ogun State Police Command reassures members of the public that proactive intelligence measures remain fully in place, and citizens are advised to remain calm, vigilant, and to avoid sharing unverified information capable of inciting fear," the statement concluded.
