Nigeria lits up as TCN restores National grid after system disturbance

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the successful restoration of the country's national grid after what it described as a ‘system disturbance’ that occurred at about 4:28pm on Thursday, March 28, 2024.

According to the transmission company, full recovery was actually achieved by 10:00pm of that same day.

Open Television reports that TCN cited a report from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo, Osun State, saying the system disturbance was triggered by a significant reduction in generation capacity, primarily due to gas constraints.

“This reduction led to a rapid decline in system frequency. This created a sudden imbalance in the grid.

“The imbalance in grid stability was exacerbated by the sudden tripping of Egbin generation turbine 3, resulting in an additional loss of 167MW load and the subsequent collapse of the grid,” a statement by the general manager, Public Affairs, TCN, Ndidi Mbah, said on Friday.

However, the TCN spokesperson added that the grid has, since been recovered and is now stable, and is currently transmitting all the generated power to distribution load centres nationwide.

In the words of Mr Mbah, “TCN emphasises its unwavering commitment to addressing grid challenges and actively working to mitigate disruptions. In instances where challenges extend beyond TCN’s control, the company collaborates with other stakeholders in the power sector value chain to minimize the impact and swiftly restore the grid to normal operation."

By this new development, Nigerians are assured of an Easter celebration without darkness as many end users of electricity power supply in different parts of the country contacted by Open Television, Naija has confirmed that the black out earlier experienced has given way to restoration of power supply.

Some parts of the country contacted includes Abuja where Alhaji Ayinde Soaga of ARCN TV confirmed the restoration.

Others are Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital where power was restored to different parts of the state capital.

Open Television's correspondent in Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria, Dare Adebesin also confirmed that the largest city in West Africa has its electricity power supply restored.
