NAMA Closes Runway, Suspends Airport Operations as Ibadan Airport Temporarily Closed for Upgrade to International Standards

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA OTN News reports that the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has closed the runway of the Ibadan airport and suspended airport operations following the announcement of temporary closure of the airport, also known as Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, in Oyo State, by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
OTN News further reports that this closure, which was approved by the Federal Government, is said to facilitate extensive upgrade works necessary to transform the airport from a domestic to an international facility.
According to a statement released by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, the upgrade aligns with the Oyo State Government’s initiative to elevate the airport to international standards.
The statement further added that the ongoing improvements and remodeling works necessitate the closure to ensure the safety of passengers and airport personnel, in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations.
OTN News, however observes that the duration of the closure has not been specified, but FAAN assures that the upgrade is crucial for enhancing the airport’s infrastructure and operational standards.
