Motorists traveling along the Abeokuta-Ibadan road were on Sunday left stranded, as erosion rendered a major section near the Federal College of Education (FCE), Osiele, impassable.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News gathered that the poorly maintained section of the federal road became flooded, leaving vehicles stuck in the muddy terrain following a heavy rainfall.
The long-neglected road which has been deteriorating over the years, gave in to the force of erosion causing a major disruption to the road and travelers using it.
Reports indicate that drivers and passengers coming from both directions, Abeokuta to Ibadan and vice versa, were forced to disembark and walk through the flooded section to continue their journeys in different vehicles waiting on the other side.
Some private car owners turned back, while others, unfamiliar with alternative routes, abandoned their vehicles that had become trapped in the mud.
A motorist affected by the situation, Chief Funsho Akinwale, described his ordeal stating, "I was heading to Ibadan from Abeokuta, but after over an hour with no solution, I had to return to Abeokuta and stay with a family friend. The suffering here is unbearable. People are stuck, and the Government has neglected this road for far too long."
OTN News further gathered that Akinwale lamented the dire state of the federal road, criticizing the authorities for their neglect.
"The erosion has taken over the road, cutting it off completely. Passengers are forced to walk through the flood to switch vehicles at the other end. This is mental torture for travelers."
The motorist stressed and concluded that the abandoned road, which connects two major cities, highlights the Government's failure to maintain critical infrastructure, leaving citizens to suffer the consequences.
