OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sounded a fresh warning over the growing trend of internet fraudsters evolving into ritual killers, following a shocking case involving a young man who allegedly buried his own mother alive in a bid to acquire wealth.

OTN News further reports as gathered that the revelation was made by the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC, Makurdi Zonal Directorate, ACE I Effa Imo Okim, during a courtesy visit to the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benue State.

During the meeting, NUJ Chairman, Bemdoo Ugber raised concerns that the Commission appeared to be shifting its focus from corrupt public office holders to primarily targeting “Yahoo-Yahoo” suspects. Okim rejected the claim, stating that the EFCC remains committed to fighting corruption at all levels.

He explained that the increased crackdown on internet fraudsters is due to their alarming involvement in violent crimes, including ritual killings.

Okim disclosed that many internet fraud suspects now seek supernatural powers to boost their criminal activities, often resorting to ritual practices that involve the sacrifice of close relatives.

He described the situation as a dangerous sign of moral decay and criminal desperation among youths.

He referred to a recent viral video in which a young man was accused of killing his mother for ritual purposes.

According to him, the incident should serve as a wake-up call for parents to closely monitor their children’s behaviour and social influences, especially those in tertiary institutions.

Furthermore, Okim narrated that the suspect joined a cult-like group shortly after gaining admission into a tertiary institution.

Members of the group allegedly connected him to a ritualist who demanded that he bury his mother alive as a condition for acquiring wealth-making powers. The suspect reportedly returned home during school holidays, dug a grave, and attacked his mother under the guise of spending time with her.

However, the EFCC official explained that the young man allegedly struck his mother with a heavy object, tied her up, dragged her into the grave and buried her alive. This actions he carried out in strict compliance with the ritualist’s instructions.

Describing the incident as one of the most horrifying cases linked to internet fraud, Okim warned that society is headed toward a dangerous future if urgent measures are not taken to reverse the trend.

He urged parents, community leaders and schools to intensify the monitoring of young people, stressing that early detection of behavioural changes may help prevent similar tragedies.
