Nigeria’s Super Eagles have on Monday night, gallantly secured a place in the quarter final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a commanding 4-0 win over Mozambique in their round of 16 clash.

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that although the Mambas of Mozambique struggle hard to find their bearing throughout the match, the Nigerian team coached byEric Chelle obviously dominated the match, thus consolidating their impressive stand in the tournament.

In the goals libe up, Ademola Lookman opened the floor by scoring Nigeria’s first goal in the 20th minute ofvthe first half calmly finishing off Akor Adams’ lay-off to register his third goal of AFCON ’25, having now scored in every match he has played in Morocco.

Some five minutes later, Victor Osimhen arrived at the back post to convert another Adams assist, doubling the lead.

Just two minutes into the second half, the Super Eagles scored a third goal as Lookman and Osimhen combining again as

Osimhen’s close-range finish made it 3-0, sealing his second goal of the night, his third of the tournament, and his 34th strike in international football.

Adams then capped an impressive all-round display with a powerful effort into the roof of the net in the 75th minute to complete the rout.

The result marked Nigeria’s fourth consecutive win at AFCON ’25, a feat the Super Eagles have never previously achieved in the competition, and made them the only team to score four goals in a single match at the tournament so far.

It was also Nigeria’s fifth straight victory over Mozambique, whom they last defeated at AFCON 2010.

Nigeria will now face the winners of the round of 16 encounter between Algeria and DR Congo in their 18th AFCON quarter final, scheduled for Saturday, January 10, at the Marrakesh Stadium.

Nigeria’s emphatic win over Mozambique was as much a statement of intent as it was a reminder of the growing gap in quality at AFCON ’25, with the Super Eagles exposing defensive frailties that the Mambas never truly recovered from after the early goals.

Football analysts have said that the Super Eagles performance reinforces their status as one of the tournament’s most competitive and truly complete sides so far.

They however warn that bigger challenges lie ahead in subsequent matches of the team where they would be required to display superior tactical team coordination traits such as defensive concentration, game management, and consistency as against their typical attacking firepower.
