The Oyo State Government has announced plans to construct airstrips in Igbeti and Otu, located in the Oke-Ogun zone, to strengthen aerial surveillance and enhance security across the region.

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News gathered that the Governor, Seyi Makinde, revealed this initiative during the inauguration of 480 Amotekun Forest Rangers in Iseyin.

The new recruits will manage the State's forest reserves and tackle issues such as kidnapping, banditry, and illegal activities.

Makinde explained that the airstrips would support surveillance efforts with aircraft and specialized security equipment.

"Our priority is the safety of Oyo State residents,” he said, adding that these efforts reflect the Government's commitment to bolstering security.

OTN News further gathered that the Forest Rangers will operate as part of the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun, covering 25 local Government areas. They will patrol forests alongside local stakeholders to protect farmers, prevent illegal activities, and conserve natural resources.

The Governor praised the success of Amotekun, initiated by South-West Governors, and promised continued support for all security agencies, including the approval of hardship allowances for corps members.

Commandant of the Amotekun Corps, Retired Colonel Olayinka Olayanju, emphasized that the Forest Rangers would play a key role in combating threats such as kidnapping, banditry, and illegal mining, complementing the state’s broader security efforts.
