OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that history unfolded in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday evening, as Nigeria’s D’Tigress cement their dominance in African women’s basketball by winning a fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title with a 78–64 triumph over Mali.

OTN News further reports that the resounding victory on Sunday not only secures Nigeria’s seventh AfroBasket crown but also extends their incredible unbeaten run in the tournament to 29 games, a streak that began in 2015.

OTN News observes that with this latest feat, Nigeria now ranks second in the all-time list of champions, trailing only Senegal, who boast 11 titles.

OTN News further observes that D’Tigress, who from being underdogs in the early 2000s to becoming the undisputed queens of African basketball, have transformed into a continental powerhouse.

Their latest conquest adds to an impressive haul of titles won in 2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and now 2025.

D’Tigress’ journey has redefined the narrative of African basketball, shifting the center of excellence firmly in their favour. Once seen as challengers to traditional giants like Senegal and Zaire (now DR Congo), Nigeria now stands as the team to beat, inspiring a new generation of female athletes across the continent.

Below is the full list of FIBA Women’s AfroBasket champions and the years they claimed the title:

Senegal – 11 titles (1974, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1984, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2009, 2015)

Nigeria – 7 titles (2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2025)

Zaire (now DR Congo) – 3 titles (1983, 1986, 1994)

Angola – 2 titles (2011, 2013)

Mali – 1 title (2007)
