A former President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, has urged Nigerians to unite in order to tackle the nation’s challenges, noting that the country has a bright future.

In a statement shared on his X platform (formerly Twitter), Jonathan acknowledged the economic difficulties facing Nigerians since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu removed fuel subsidies.

According to the former President, the hardships in the land have led many citizens across the country to take to the streets in peaceful protests to voice their grievances.

Addressing the economic hardship, hunger, and socio-political issues affecting the country, Jonathan assured Nigerians that there is hope on the horizon.

"As we commemorate this important day, I urge Nigerians to remain optimistic, resilient, and committed to our nation’s progress despite the challenges. With a shared purpose, determination, and mutual love, we can rise above our difficulties and create a prosperous nation where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed," part of his message stated.

"Today, we celebrate an important milestone in our nation’s history, the 64th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence. It is a moment to reflect on and honor the efforts of our nationalists who fought to bring an end to colonial rule."

OTN News further gathered that Jonathan reflects on gaining independence in 1960, stating that Nigeria have made progress in several sectors, overcoming numerous challenges on our path to nationhood.

"Our Fourth Republic has experienced sustained democracy for 25 years, following the conclusion of military rule in 1999."

"Our economy has witnessed measurable growth, and we have continued to maintain our unity and belief in the social fabric of our nation."

Jonathan however said, "we still face significant challenges that test our determination and resilience as a people. These include setbacks in achieving our goals related to security, economic advancement, national unity, and infrastructure development."

"To deepen democracy and promote inclusive economic growth, we must strengthen our institutions and cultivate a democratic culture that ensures peaceful, transparent, free, and fair elections."

"This is essential for good governance, sustainable democracy, national unity, and peaceful coexistence."

As a nation, Jonathan stressed, that Nigerians must recommit to the values of justice, equity, and inclusion. We should harness our diversity, leverage the potential of our youth, and make the best use of our natural resources for the benefit of all.

On this significant occasion, Jonathan encourage Nigerians to remain hopeful, steadfast, and dedicated to our nation’s greatness despite the difficulties we face.

"With unity, determination, and a spirit of love for one another, we can overcome these challenges and build a prosperous country where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive," he finalised.
