Nigerian police officers have reportedly confronted citizens participating during the peaceful #FearlessInOctober protest in Abuja, using teargas and live ammunition against them.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News gathered the protest, aimed at denouncing economic hardships and poor governance under President Bola Tinubu's administration, took place on Tuesday morning in areas like Jabi and Utako.
OTN News gathered from videos that surfaced online showing demonstrators fleeing for safety as police clashed with the protesters, who were calling for an end to poverty and chanting slogans like "We are hungry."
Banners at the protest carried messages such as "Bad Governance has ended the dreams of Nigerian youths, end it now" and "Enough is Enough – Revolution Now."
Earlier in the week, human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, had called on Nigerians to join the protest against widespread hardships and insecurity.
OTN News recalls that, in a statement on Monday, Sowore had emphasized that he could not remain silent amid the country's ongoing suffering, stressing that peaceful protests are a fundamental right to challenge Government policies.
He also highlighted his experience of imprisonment and persecution by the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Government, reaffirming his determination to fight for the people's demands.
