FG Unveils Plans for Nigeria's Silver Jubilee Democracy Day Celebrations

The Federal Government of Nigerian has unveiled programmes for Democracy Day celebrations. 

The government on Sunday, announced that a military parade would be held to mark this year’s Democracy Day on Wednesday at Eagle Square, Abuja. 

Open Television Naija recalls that the celebration of Nigeria's Democracy Day is in commemoration of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, but annulled by the Babangida military administration, of which the government of former President Muhammadu Buhari formally conferred late MKO Abiola,

the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) and declared June 12 as new date for Democracy Day, in place of May 29, the usual date effective from June 12, 2018.

The parade, which will kick-off at 8am, will be followed by a dinner at the State House Banquet Hall, Aso Villa at 6pm, government said.

Open Television Naija reports that the Democracy Day events for this year mark the silver jubilee anniversary of democracy in Nigeria, which would be preceded by on Tuesday June 11 by a symposium at the State House at 9am, to be followed by a youth conference at Ladi Kwali Hall, Abuja Continental Hotel, Abuja, at 6:00 pm.

A statement by Abdulhakeem Adeoye, on behalf of the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) said “only accredited Villa correspondents will be granted access to cover the events held at the Presidential Villa.
