After meeting a young man in Paris who introduced himself as the Prince of Saudi Arabia, Nigerian artist and producer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, sparked a lively conversation online by referring to himself as the “King of Nigeria.”
The interaction, captured in a video shared on social media on September 5, 2024, where OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News gathered that Davido makes the declaration while taking photos with the prince.
The statement immediately triggered varied reactions on social media. Some fans applauded the Afrobeats star for his confidence, while others criticized what they saw as unnecessary self-praise.
One user, Gozie, supported Davido’s claim, saying, “He’s earned it. He can go ahead.” On the other hand, Whizkid FC dismissed the remark, calling it "bragging over nothing."
Big BOJ took a more sarcastic tone, downplaying Davido's standing in Nigerian music, while Lirah Back directly questioned his talent.
El Kopik also criticized the statement, saying, “Anyone who calls himself a king is not a true king.”
However, other fans, Rossie, rushed to defend Davido arguing “He’s the biggest artist in Africa, so it’s understandable,” and Ayochukwu Emmanuel, a Facebook user, expressed his frustration at the criticism, asserting that Davido is the rightful "King of Nigeria" regardless of detractors' opinions.
Another user, Em My, pointed out that everyone is free to call themselves what they want but maintained that Wizkid remains the true king.
In addition, Senator Dino Melaye weighed in, calling Davido “001” and naming him the most globally recognized Nigerian artist.
This isn’t the first time Davido has made bold claims, earlier this year, he tweeted that his arrival in the industry disrupted the peace, a statement he expressed pride in.
Last year 2023, he also reminded critics of his Grammy nomination and past achievements in response to mockery.
