Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic will stop being members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) with effect from 2025.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the President of ECOWAS commission, Alieu Touray, made this announcement on Sunday during the 66th ordinary session of heads of states and governments in Abuja.
It would be recalled that the military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger announced their immediate withdrawal from the ECOWAS in earlier in the year 2024.
Prior to the withdrawal, the trio were suspended from ECOWAS, with Niger and Mali facing heavy sanctions, following military incursions and truncation of democratic governments in those Francophone West African countries.
Touray further revealed that ECOWAS has now set the countries’ exit at January 29, 2025 – July 29, 2025.
