OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the federal government has taken a stunning move by abolishing the 5 percent excise duty on telecommunications services, introduced under the former president Muhammadu Buhari administration.
OTN News further reports as gathered that the National Orientation Agency, (NOA), disclosed this new development in a statement posted on its official X handle, formerly Twitter, on Thursday.
OTN News observes that the levy which was introduced under former President Muhammadu Buhari was to affect the cost associated with voice calls and internet data.
However, the Tinubu's led-administration directed the removal of the tax, noting that the current administration is committed to making communication more affordable.
OTN News, however, observes that the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Aminu Maida, confirming the development said that President Bola Tinubu directed the removal of the tax during deliberations on the recently signed Finance Act.
He said, "this is a clear signal that the government is listening to the concerns of Nigerians and is committed to making communication more affordable."
