Tragedy struck in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Saturday, as unknown assailants brutally murdered the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Ward 15, Abeokuta South, Adeleke Adeyinka, ahead of the November 2024 local government elections.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the former youth leader of Ward 15 was attacked on Saturday at the Jide Jones area of Abeokuta Central Business District.
OTN News gathered that the attackers, driving a car with tinted windows, trailed the Councillorship Candidate, Adeyinka to the location, shot him, and then stoned him to death.
In a swift response to the sad development, the Ogun State Youth Leaders’ Forum has condemned the killing in a statement made available to the press and signed by the Youth Leader of Abeokuta South, Comrade Kabir Odedairo, and the Forum's Public Relations Officer, Comrade Timothy Odedina.
The group described the act as senseless and devastating for the local community.
“Adeleke was not just a promising leader but also a dedicated member of our party, having previously served as the youth leader for Ward 15 and actively worked towards the upcoming elections,” the statement read.
OTN News further reports that the Forum is demanding an immediate investigation into the murder, urging law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice. They also called on the police to enhance security patrols in the area to prevent further violence.
“Adeleke’s contributions to the Ogun State Youth Leaders’ Forum will not be forgotten, and his untimely death is a significant loss to the youth community across the state,” the statement continued.
However, reports indicate that the attackers, driving a car with tinted windows, trailed Adeyinka to the location, shot him, and then stoned him to death.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Ogun State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, went unanswered.
In conclusion, the Forum stressed the need for swift action, stating, "We demand a thorough investigation and justice for Adeleke. Authorities must ensure those responsible are held accountable, and security in the area must be strengthened to prevent such tragic incidents in the future."
