OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a major political shift ahead of the next general polls.
OTN News further reports that Obi made the declaration at a political gathering in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he addressed supporters on his political future and explained the circumstances that led to his exit from the Labour Party (LP).
Speaking at the event, the former governor disclosed that his decision to leave the Labour Party was influenced by information suggesting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) might not recognise the party’s leadership structure if he remained.
He said there were also signs of deliberate moves aimed at blocking his participation in the 2027 presidential race.
According to Obi, the uncertainty surrounding the Labour Party’s status compelled him to seek an alternative platform in order to secure his candidacy and avoid legal or administrative obstacles that could derail his ambition.
“I Will Contest Regardless,” Obi declared, assuring supporters that he remains resolute in his decision to run for president irrespective of political pressure or institutional challenges.
He stressed that he would participate in the election wherever and however it is conducted, adding that protecting the integrity of the electoral process would be central to his campaign.
Obi identified the proper transmission of election results as a key concern, noting that credible elections are fundamental to restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy.
His remarks were met with loud applause from supporters at the gathering, many of whom reaffirmed their backing for his presidential bid and praised his determination to remain in the race.
OTN News observes that in a follow-up message shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi reiterated his commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian vote counts in the 2027 polls.
He emphasised the need for transparency in result management, credible elections, and far-reaching reforms to strengthen trust in the democratic process.
Obi’s declaration signals an early wave of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, as parties reposition, form alliances, and court influential political figures.
Analysts said that his entry into the ADC could significantly reshape the opposition landscape and bring increased national attention to the party as preparations for the next presidential contest gather momentum.
