Former Nigerian Vice President who is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has urged political leaders, statesmen, and stakeholders to act decisively in safeguarding Nigeria's democracy from threats of authoritarianism.

As gathered by OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News from an Independence Day message by the former Vice President on Monday, Atiku emphasized the need for collective action to realize the aspirations of Nigeria's founders.

Atiku accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of exploiting the disarray among opposition parties, rendering them ineffective.

"Our political landscape has become increasingly toxic, with opposition parties weakened while the ruling party manipulates processes to neutralize them," Atiku stated.

"Nigeria stands at the edge of one-party dominance, and it is the responsibility of principled politicians and leaders to rescue our democracy from these rising threats."

Reflecting on Nigeria's 64th Independence anniversary, OTN News reports that Atiku underscored the perseverance of Nigerians and their belief in the country's potential as reasons for celebration.

"Our nation has faced many challenges, yet the courage of patriotic citizens, supported by our international partners, has strengthened our resilience," the statement read.

Atiku also expressed concern over declining electoral credibility due to interference from the ruling class and called for a united front among political leaders to offer credible opposition.

"Our founding fathers achieved independence through unity and peaceful political activism. What we celebrate today is the outcome of their collective struggle and that of subsequent generations," Atiku concluded.
