OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA OTN News reports that the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in both the 2019 and 2023 general elections, also the human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner, Omoyele Sowore, on Saturday reaffirmed his commitment to contesting and winning the 2027 presidential elections.

OTN News further reports that Sowore made this statement while speaking to journalists during the 2025 ECOWAS-Abuja International Marathon, where he also participated in the 5km race.

Speaking, sowore expressed confidence that he would triumph in the upcoming race for the presidency, which he anticipates will feature current President Bola Tinubu and other contenders.

According to him, The race I want to win is happening soon—the race where you’ll see me, Tinubu, and others compete for the ultimate prize.

Furthermore, Sowore took the opportunity to discuss his passion for sports. He highlighted Nigeria’s potential to benefit economically from the sports sector, much like the earnings from oil, and called on the government to invest in sports beyond just football.

He mentioned activities like swimming, snooker, javelin, and shot put as important areas that could bring both national pride and economic benefits.

Sowore who acknowledged the significance of participation in events like the marathon and praised the spirit of every runner who took part, expressed a sense of camaraderie, saying, “Everybody that ran here is high-profile. It takes a lot of energy to run 5km. I didn’t want to win because I wanted others to win—I just want to participate.”

Meanwhile, he advocated for more investment in sports across all sectors and encouraged the government to consider the potential of diverse sporting activities.

“Instead of focusing on oil and sharing oil money, maybe we should invest more in sports, in every sector. We can even participate in the Winter Olympics. Nigerians can do anything, and that is why we deserve better leaders,” Sowore stated.
