Following clashes between immigration authorities and demonstrators in the Los Angeles area in reactions againstTrump’s immigration crackdown, raids, and deportations, President Donald Trump has signed off the deployment of no fewer than 2,000 National Guardsmen to Los Angeles to disperse protesters.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered from international media sources that the unrest, which began over the last weekend, saw dozens of people detained by federal immigration agents across different locations as Trump's Border Czar Tom Homan says local California officials, including the governor and LA mayor, could be arrested if they continue to oppose the federal operation around Los Angeles.
OTN News further reports that by the development, Trump has invoked his authority under Title 10, which allows the president to call in the National Guard as necessary to repel invasion, suppress rebellion or execute laws.
However, US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth said active duty marines at Camp Pendleton will also be mobilized if the unrest continues.
Similarly, the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that, "
These operations are essential to halting and reversing the invasion of illegal criminals into the United States. In the wake of this violence, California’s feckless Democrat leaders have completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens."
Meanwhile, the move by the White House’s is facing criticism from some in law enforcement as many see the deployment of the National Guard as an overreaction that may backfire and only provoke additional agitators.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has described the deployment of troops “purposefully inflammatory” and warned it would only escalate tensions.
According to Newsom, "This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust."
OTN gathered that President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan specifically told NBC News that local California officials, including the governor and LA mayor, could be arrested if they continue to oppose the federal operation around Los Angeles.
Accusing Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass of creating “a sanctuary for criminals,” adding that neither are exempt from potential arrest, Homan said, "It’s a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien. It’s a felony to impede law enforcement from doing their job.”
