OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump has said that he is "not joking" about seeking a third term in office, a move prohibited by the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment.
OTN News further reports as gathered that Mr Trump, who disclosed this in an interview with NBC on Sunday, said that there was a method to achieve it.
According to him, “A lot of people want me to do it. But we have — my thinking is, we have a long way to go. I’m focused on the current.”
When asked if he wanted another term as president, Trump said, “I like working.”
When further asked to clarify what he meant, Mr Trump said, “I’m not joking. But I’m not — it is far too early to think about it.”
“There are methods which you could do it,” Trump added, when asked by NBC’s Kristen Welker, when discussing the possibility of a tenure extension, and how he plans to achieve his third term bid.
OTN News observes that third term for Trump would violate the U.S. 22nd Amendment, a clause in the American Constitution that says no person “shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice.”
OTN News recalls that a few days after Mr Trump made a historic return to the White House for a second term, Andy Ogles, House of Representatives of Tennessee, proposed an amendment to the Constitution that would see Mr Trump eligible for a third term.
