Tragedy Strikes NPF Again as Lagos Chief Superintendent of Police Dies During Surgery

Barely a year after former Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, died after surgery at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, the Nigeria Police has suffered another tragedy with the death of a Chief Superintendent of Police, who reportedly died after a surgery.

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the Nigeria Police Force mourns the death of one of it Chief Superintendent of Police, (CSP) Matilda Ngbaronye, who was the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Festac Division in Lagos.

OTN News further reports that the Lagos state police public relations officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, who confirmed the incident to news men, disclosed that the deceased officer died on Friday after undergoing a surgery.

CSP Matilda Ngbaronye's death was said to have occurred at about 11:30 p.m. during a medical session for fibroid treatment at the Mayriamville Medical Centre in Surulere, Lagos State.

According to the statement, the Lagos State Police Command deeply regrets to announce the passing of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Festac Division, CSP Matilda Ngbaronye, who sadly passed away after undergoing surgery at Mayriamville Medical Centre, Bode Thomas, Surulere, Lagos State on Friday 24th October, 2025.

“The Command mourns the loss of a truly upright and dedicated officer who served with unwavering professionalism and integrity. Until her passing, she was known for her diligence, discipline, and commitment to duty. 

"Her friendly disposition and humane approach to policing greatly helped to bridge the gap between the Police and the public she dutifully served. At no time was she found wanting in the discharge of her responsibilities.

“The news of her demise came as a rude shock to the entire Command. The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP OLOHUNDARE JIMOH and all officers and men of the Command commiserate with her family and aged mother on this irreparable loss. 

"The CP has personally reached out to her husband and her elder brother, who is a priest, to extend the Command’s heartfelt condolences and support during this difficult time.

“Burial arrangements will be communicated in due course. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.” she added.

OTN Neww recalls that on Thursday August 29, 2025, the former Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, died after surgery for prostrate at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

His death came at a time when former Ogun Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Yusuph Olaniyonu, who went through a traumatic medical care encounters in the hand of the Nigerian health system openly wrote about his near-death experiences, sparking wide public outrage about the many inefficiencies in the country’s health care delivery system and countless records of avoidable deaths.

OTN News prays for the repose of the soul of CSP Matilda Ngbaronye and also pray that thecfamily of the senior police officer receive the divine fortitude to bear the irreparable loss at this difficult time.
