OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has called on employers in Niger State to provide accommodation and stipends for Corps members, emphasizing that such support is essential for their welfare and performance.

OTN News further reports that the appeal was made during the 2025 NYSC Corps Employers Workshop held in Minna, with the theme: "Administration of Contemporary Corps Members (Gen Z) for Achieving Organisational Objectives."

Speaking at the event, the Acting Director of NYSC North Central Area Office 1, Mrs. Ikupolati Esther Tosin, represented by Deputy Director, Mr. Tony Nzoka, expressed concern over the lack of welfare support for Corps members in the state.

“I implore all Corps employers to provide accommodation and stipends to support their federal allowance, as Niger is lacking in these aspects,” Tosin said.

She noted that the workshop was designed to strengthen collaboration between NYSC and Corps employers, while addressing challenges that affect the smooth administration of the scheme.

Some of the issues identified include delays in monthly and final clearance, inadequate welfare provisions, and inefficient deployment processes.

Tosin also highlighted the evolving nature of Corps members, referring to them as products of a digital era influenced by the internet and social media.

She urged employers to embrace strategies such as emotional intelligence, empathy, maturity, and adaptability in managing these Gen Z Corps members.

In her welcome remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator for Niger, Mrs. Martina Shuaibu-Ibrahim, commended Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago for his continued support of the NYSC scheme.

“This gathering provides an opportunity for stakeholders to interact and chart a course of action for the continued positive actualisation of NYSC’s lofty ideals,” she said, noting that the workshop also allows stakeholders to assess and improve their contributions to the programme.

The Special Guest of Honour, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board and Secretary to the Niger State Government, represented by Dr. Idris Lego, Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, urged employers to leverage the potential of Corps members in achieving developmental goals.

“NYSC remains a powerful platform for youth empowerment, national unity, and community development. As administrators and employers, your role is pivotal in shaping the experience of Corps members and aligning their contributions with our state’s objectives.” Usman noted.

However, papers were presented on “Attributes/characteristics of GENZ corps members and Strategies for Engaging stakeholders in the administration of GENZ corps members in achieving organisational goals.

It concluded with the presentation of awards to outstanding Corps employers in recognition of their dedication and contributions to the NYSC programme.
