Stampede: Two Minors Dead, 20 Affected in Gombe Eld-Al-Fitr Prayer Ground

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News recalls that the Gombe State Police Command has confirmed the death of two minors, identified as Aisha Salisu Ahmed, 4½ years and Maryam Abdullahi Gwani, 4 years, following a stampede that occurred at the Gombe main Eid prayer ground on Sunday.

OTN News further reports that this was made known in a statement by the Command PPRO, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, which was made available to journalists in Gombe. 

According to the PPRO, "Regrettably, two of the victims were certified dead by the medical doctor while receiving treatment, namely: Aisha Salisu Ahmed, 4½ years and Maryam Abdullahi Gwani, 4 years.

“Gombe State Police Command headquarters wishes to provide an update on the stampede incident that occurred at the Gombe main Eid Ground.

“The incident took place on Sunday, 30/03/2025, at approximately 10:45 AM, at the exit gate of the Eid Ground, immediately after the conclusion of the Eid prayer.

“A large crowd, primarily consisting of women and children, rushed to leave the venue in haste, which, coupled with the intense heat, led to the stampede. As a result, 22 persons were affected.

“A swift response was made as ambulances from the Gombe State Government House quickly evacuated 15 victims to Zainab Bulkachuwa Hospital, while seven others were taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, (FTH), Gombe, for medical treatment.

“In a gracious gesture, His Excellency, the Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has decided to cover the medical bills for all the victims receiving treatment.” he added.

Subsequently, the Police Command extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished speedy recovery to the injured, who are currently receiving medical care.

The Command, however, advised the managers of the Eid grounds to ensure that all entrances and exit gates are opened to allow for the smooth movement of worshippers, particularly after the prayers.
