Shehu Sani Urges FG to Replace LG ‘Chairman’ Title with ‘Mayor’, Gives Reason

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has called on the Federal Government to replace the title of Local Government “Chairman” with “Mayor,” insisting that the current designation fails to capture the executive authority of the office.
OTN News further reports that Sani, who made the suggestion in a Facebook post on Sunday, argued that the term “Chairman” is more appropriate for a committee role rather than an executive position.
He stressed that the nomenclature undermines the relevance of local government, which serves as the third tier of governance in Nigeria.
“The title of Local Government ‘Chairman’ should be changed to Mayor. This title of ‘Chairman’ doesn’t properly reflect an executive position and makes no sense,” the former senator wrote.
According to him, adopting the term “Mayor,” as practised in many democratic countries, would elevate the dignity of the office and align Nigeria’s local governance structure with international standards.
His remarks come at a time when debates over local government autonomy, funding, and functionality are gaining traction across the country.
Sani, known for his outspoken stance on governance and reform, maintained that the choice of nomenclature is not merely about semantics but also about shaping public perception and respect for the role.
