Protect Christians in Nigeria- Italian PM Tells Federal Government
By: Olufemi Orunsola
Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to guarantee the protection of Christians in the country.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that she made the call in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) over the weekend.
Meloni described the recent violence in Nigeria as “heinous and unacceptable,” urging authorities to intensify security measures.
She urged the government to take decisive action against those responsible for attacks on Christian communities.
In her words, "We strongly condemn the renewed violence that took place today against Christian communities in Nigeria. Religious freedom is an inviolable right. We ask the Nigerian government to strengthen the protection of Christian communities and all religious groups and to prosecute those responsible for these heinous attacks,” she said.
She further stressid that Italy is in solidarity with affected families and communities living in fear due to religiously motivated violence ravaging the West African country.
She noted that "Italy expresses all its closeness to the victims and to the communities in Nigeria who today feel in danger because of their religious beliefs."
The Italian Prime Ministers comments on the security situation in Nigeria marks an additional voice to international responses to the worsening security situation in Nigeria where multiple attacks by bandits, unknown gunmen, and terrorists on innocent citizens, have increased, assuming a worrisome magnitude with the abduction of 327 persons at a private school owned by the Catholic Church.
With the comment from the Italian PM, known for conservative diplomatic stance and non interference in local affairs of other countries, many analysts believe that the attention of the world is getting more drawn to the security situation in Nigeria.
What one is, however, not sure of is, if the Nigerian government will heed the call from the international community to take swift action as against merely toeing the path of denying the Christian genocide narratives.
