President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Attorney General to promptly secure the release of minors detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests in Kano and Kaduna on August 3, 2024.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News gathered that this directive was announced Monday by Minister of Information, Idris Muhammad, during a State House briefing.
The President emphasized that the minors should be released immediately, regardless of ongoing legal matters.
Additionally, President Tinubu has tasked the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs with ensuring the well-being of the minors and supporting their smooth reintegration with their families.
To further address the situation, an administrative committee will be established to investigate the minors' arrest and treatment.
Muhammad added that law enforcement officers involved in the detentions would be scrutinized, and any found responsible for misconduct will face disciplinary actions.
Earlier, several protesters, including minors, appeared in a Federal High Court in Abuja. During the hearing, four children reportedly collapsed and were subsequently removed from the courtroom.
The court later granted bail of N10 million to 72 defendants while excluding the ailing children from the charges. All other defendants entered not guilty pleas.
These detentions have ignited a national debate, with human rights advocates urging the Government to protect the children’s welfare and uphold their rights throughout the legal process.
