Reports reaching OPEN TELEVISION Naija have it that legendary Nigerian singer, a veteran journalist and actress cum social activist, Ms Onyeka Onwenu has died on Tuesday, aged 72.
OPEN TELEVISION Naija gathered that the iconic singer slumed after her performance at the Birthday of a family friend of hers but she could not make it back to life even after being rushed to a private specialist hospital.
According to an eye witness account, the iconic singer who has to her credits many evergreen songs,had her last performance at the Birthday party of Mrs.Stella Okoli on Tuesday, where she reportedly slummed from her seat shortly after the performance and was immediately rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos.
A family source also confirmed the sas incident which has thrown fans of the deceased singer into a mourning mood. The family source revealed "It is quite sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at Mrs. Stella Okoli's birthday party today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and she slumped afterwards. "She was taken to Reddington Hospital, and she couldn't make it," the unidentified eyewitness told the newspaper.
Meanwhile, the actual cause of the death of the legendary singer is yet to be confirmed.
For the records, OPEN TELEVISION Naija recalls that Ms Onyeka Onwenu was Born on January 31, 1952. Onyeka Onwenu was in her life time a multi-talented entertainer who held the Nigerian entertainment sector spellbound with her uncommon song composition ability, unique vocal texture and irresistible stage command and crafts for more than forty years. Onwenu shined as an actress, journalist, legendary singer and songwriter as well as a politician in her own right
Her upbeat style of music blended music genres like highlife, reggae, and pop, focusing on social and political themes.
The Lady of the Sun as she is fondly called by many, will be remembered for some of her evergreen songs like the popularly "One Love," (Keep us Together ), "Iyogogo," and "Ekwe."
It is also on records that Onyeka Onwenu dubbed "The Elegant Stallion" by the Nigerian press, once served as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 consequent upon her appointment by the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women's Development.
The late Onyeka Onwenu was a choice and preferred performer who has thrilled the high and mighty in Nigeria, including Presidents, diplomats and other dignitaries.
