President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved dissolution of the Governing Council of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State, the removal of the institutions new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, and the registrar, Mrs. Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike, from office with immediate effect.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that the dissolved council, led by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, included five other members: Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, and Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin.
In a statement by Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the sacking of the governing council and officials was a strategic intervention by the Presidency in the crisis brewing at the university over the illegal appointment of an unqualified vice-chancellor without following due process.
Following the controversial appointment, the Federal Government stepped in to address tensions between the university’s Senate and the governing council of the institution.
OTN News gathered that the Federal government took the action to correct the council’s apparent disregard for the university’s governing laws in the selection process of the Vice Chancellor and principal officers of the university in order to prevent escalation of the situation into an institutional crisis.
