Politics: Kwankwaso, Donald Duke Meet Obasanjo Over Nigeria’s Future

Olufemi Orunsola

ABEOKUTA, Two Nigerian political stalwarts, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, have visited former President, Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State over the weekend to discuss Nigeria's political future.

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports that Kwankwaso disclosed the meeting in a post on his official X handle (formerly Twitter), revealing that the visit revolved around discussions on pressing national issues, particularly the future of politics and governance in Nigeria.

The Northern politician's post reads:“I was pleased to be in the company of my friend, HE Donald Duke, and other associates to pay a courtesy call on President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta. Deliberations on significant national issues, including the future of politics and governance in Nigeria, defined the conversation.

“We are grateful to Baba for his warm support and hospitality. – RMK,” Kwankwaso stated.

The visit underscored the ongoing political dialogue among key figures ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts suggest that such engagements highlight the importance of collective input in addressing Nigeria’s political and governance challenges.

The former Nigerian President, who has been a vocal advocate for national unity and development, has consistently played a central role in bridging political divides and fostering discourse on Nigeria’s future.

OTN recalls that the meeting came barely a few weeks after Obasanjo attended the wedding of Kwankwaso’s daughter in Kano, where he was seen wearing the iconic red cap of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

The event also witnessed the attendance of prominent political and business leaders, including Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Although Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has consistently made it known that he has quitted active politics, choosing to play the role of an elder statesman, he has remained a political reference point with many political stalwarts turning his residence in Abeokuta to a political Mecca of some sort.
