Police Summon Sowore Over Alleged Forgery, Incitement

OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News reports as gathered that the Nigeria Police Force has summoned former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, over allegations of forgery and inciting public disturbance.

OTN News further reports as gathered that a letter dated August 1, 2025, and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Akin Fakorede of the IGP Monitoring Unit, invited Sowore to appear at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, August 4, at 10:00 a.m.

The letter, referencing a petition dated July 31, 2025, indicated that Sowore's name featured prominently in the police investigation.

“In view of the foregoing, and in the spirit of fair hearing, you are kindly requested to interview the undersigned through the SP Abdulhafiz Garba, at the Monitoring Unit, First Floor, Force Headquarters Abuja on Monday 4th August, 2025 by 1000hrs to shed more light on the allegations,” the invitation read.

The police cited Section 53(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2025, as the legal basis for the summons.

Reacting on Saturday via his official Facebook page, Sowore shared a copy of the invitation letter and accused the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of targeting him once again.

He described the summons as part of an ongoing campaign of harassment following earlier attempts to prosecute him on cybercrime charges and the confiscation of his international passport.

“He’s invited me to his ‘IGP Monitoring Unit’ section for ‘Forgery and INCTING Disturbance’ investigations, they claimed,” Sowore wrote. “I will be there on Monday, and I’ll be inviting all our people in the revolutionary struggle to come with me.” Sowore added.

OTN News observes that Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, has had a series of confrontations with the police in recent months. Most recently, he accused a plain-clothes police officer of stealing his Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses during a protest at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The protest was in solidarity with retired police officers demanding their pensions.

OTN News, however, recalls that the police have yet to release further details on the specific nature of the forgery and disturbance allegations against Sowore.
