The Labour Party's Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, has thrown his weight behind the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August, expressing solidarity with the movement.
During a courtesy visit to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, Obi pointed out that the Nigerian Constitution allows protests as a means for citizens to express themselves.
He encouraged protesters to keep their demonstrations peaceful and within legal limits.
He also stressed that such protests are constitutional right for Nigerian citizens.
However, Obi noted that hunger and hopelessness among the youth are key motivators for the protest and urged Nigerian authorities to take the demonstrators' concerns seriously.
He has also commended Governor Otti for being attentive to the current challenges faced by Nigerians.
"Governance involves listening and engaging with the people. It is important to address their concerns. Protests are allowed under the Nigerian Constitution," Obi stated.
He appealed to participants to conduct themselves lawfully and civilly, reflecting the nation's commitment to legal norms.
Obi emphasized that protests are a global phenomenon and stressed the importance of engaging with protesters to understand their grievances.
In addition, the former Anambra State Governor also urged security agencies to protect the protesters while operating within legal limits.
He said, "Security forces should manage the situation appropriately, without being overbearing."
