The Federal Government is encouraging young Nigerians to develop technical and essential skills in order to tackle the country’s growing youth unemployment challenge.
Youth Development Minister, Comrade Ayodele Olawande made this call during the Africa and National Youth Day Celebration in Abuja, with the theme “Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century – Building a Resilient Education System: A New Hope for Nigerian Youth,” highlighting the importance of skills like critical thinking, digital literacy, and effective communication for success in today’s job market.
OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News also reports that the Youth Development Minister, Olawande urged youths to invest in skills-building to enhance their employability and increase their chances with prospective employers.
He emphasized that building these skills would enable young Nigerians to better navigate a complex job market and address the growing unemployment crisis.
Olawande also connected the theme to the One Youth, Two Skills initiative, which promotes practical skills alongside formal education.
He described this as a key part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to create sustainable employment and foster economic growth.
Professor Ahmed Adamu of Nile University, Abuja, also spoke at the event, noting that technological advancements could see 85 million jobs lost next year, while 97 million new roles are expected to emerge.
He emphasized the importance of young people actively learning and adapting to new technologies to stay competitive and capitalize on future opportunities rather than being left behind.
